Patrick John Stuver is a California-based artist working in paint, ceramics, and mixed media. Drawing from a lifelong practice of working with found objects, Stuver produces paintings and sculptures which are esoteric, natural, free-flowing combinations of materials and ideas. Recent work incorporates studio debris such as sawdust and packing materials, “leftovers” which embed both textural and conceptual dimensions in the artworks. His practice is based in a desire to rearrange the world by finding meaning in random patterns, which leads to artworks that often contain hidden messages and embedded sub-pictures. The phenomenon of face pareidolia, for example, is often apparent in Stuver’s works. Resisting imagery that enables viewers to have an “all-at-once” experience, these subtle Easter eggs encourage a deeper relationship with the artwork.
